How to make your own pizza for $1.50

For the days when you’re craving pizza but haven’t quite got the funds to cover another takeaway, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick, easy and healthy homemade pizza recipe.

As much as we all love pizza, it isn’t the cheapest or, alas, the healthiest option. Luckily for you, we’ve got a recipe for you to make your own pizza which is much cheaper than a takeaway, but just as tasty.

Cover the pizza with lovely, colourful veg, and you can squeeze in some of your five-a-day to add a bit of nutrition to your favourite meal.

Once you’ve got the main ingredients and equipment in the cupboard, you can make your own pizza again and again for a really low cost. And, if you’ve got mates round, you can feed the group for almost nothing per person.

When we made this recipe, we bulked up the ingredients to make five pizzas which cost us $11.35 altogether. That works out at $2.27 per pizza.

And, we later found the same ingredients for around £7.50, so you could be spending just $1.50 or less per pizza. Bon appétit.

Homemade pizza recipe

Equipment

To make this pizza, you’ll need:

  • Kitchen scales
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Measuring jug.

It might feel like you’re having to splash out a lot to get these, but you can find some really good deals on them. And, once you’ve bought them, they’ll last ages.

Ingredients

  • 225g self-raising flour (7p)
  • 45ml cooking oil (5p)
  • 90ml warm water (free)
  • A sprinkle of salt (1p)
  • Tomato puree (20p)
  • Grated cheese (40p)
  • Toppings of your choice!

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (gas mark 4).
  2. Place the flour and salt into a mixing bowl.
  3. Slowly mix in the olive oil and warm water to form a dough ball (if it’s too sticky, add more flour; if it’s too dry, add more water).
  4. Sprinkle flour onto the rolling pin and the kitchen surface you’ll be rolling the dough on, so the dough doesn’t stick.
  5. Roll out the dough ball to form a pizza base.
  6. Place the pizza base on a baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes.
  7. Remove the base, cover with tomato puree and top with cheese, then load up your toppings.
  8. Cook in the oven for a further 10–15 minutes.
  9. The best part: remove it from the oven and enjoy!

Extra tips for making your own pizza

There are many reasons to try making your own pizza – one being that you have the freedom to mix and match your favourite toppings.

If you buy the ingredients in bulk, you can make a few meals at the same time with different toppings. If you’re cooking for one friend who loves meat and another who’s veggie, making pizzas is a super easy way to keep everyone happy.

As well as being a great thing to make for friends, you can get everyone around to make pizzas together.

Either at pre-drinks or at a dinner party, making pizza is a really lovely, chilled thing to do with mates. Plus, if everyone makes them together, it means the cooking and washing up’s not all left to you. Win-win.
